Starting your job

Some things to remember

You got the job!

Congratulations - you are ready to start a new chapter in your life. This stage can be quite scary and a bit unnerving, so let’s look at how we can make it simple and trouble free.

  1. Give notice to your current employer (verbally to your line manager in the first instance) stating that you have found new employment and a date when you will be leaving.
  2. Follow this with written confirmation that you will be leaving on a specific date. Your letter should also thank your current employer for time spent with them. The letter does not need to be more than a couple of lines, e.g. (click here to download)

Dear ....,

I write to confirm that I am resigning from my position as……………………………… (job title)

I have decided that it is time to move on and I have accepted a position elsewhere. This was not an easy decision and it took a lot of careful consideration. However, I am confident that my new role will help me to move towards some of my career goals.

Accordingly, I hereby give you …... (no of weeks / months) notice of my intention to leave from today’s date. My last day will therefore be………… (insert date)

Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your team and wish you and (name of company) the very best for the future.

Yours sincerely

  1. Your present employer may try and persuade you to stay with an improved contract. If so, ask why are they now offering something that had not been mentioned before. Also call your 360 consultant for his / her guidance (remember why you want to take the next step in your career and what this new role will enable you to do.)
  2. Clarify your start date with your new employer and who and where to report to on your first day. Also, ask about any induction plans and the dress code.
  3. The day before you start, it’s a nice touch to confirm to your new company that you are looking forward to joining them.
  4. Finally, don’t forget to organise your leaving party – ideally not the night before you start your new job!

Please keep in touch
If you have questions or problems in this process - no matter how small – please call your 360 consultant.

We would also love to hear from you after your first week so let us know how you are getting on. Good luck.
